Research students / A bounded beginning

Start with a question
you can repeat.

We welcome careful work with a small instrument budget. A modest, repeatable procedure is more useful than an ambitious promise without a measurable comparison.

  1. Is it the window or the culture?

How can window fouling be distinguished from increased suspended biomass? Hold lamp setting, path length and time fixed before asking which external references separate the two.

  2. Could someone reconstruct the transfer?

Which boundary-log fields let another operator reconstruct a material transfer? Distinguish time, material, quantity and responsibility rather than covering them with a general “maintenance” note.

  3. How do you show a missing channel?

What should a reader see when other channels remain readable? Keep the reason for failure rather than inferring a continuous-looking answer from another channel.

One page can begin a useful discussion.

  • A one-page question and proposed comparison.
  • One complete example measurement record.
  • A short account of a failed experiment: what failed, and how you knew.
  • Your orbital-access and on-site work constraints.

An equally bounded alternative question is welcome. This page takes no applications and uploads no identity or health documents; prepare the research question and working conditions first.

Read an example of a workable proposal

Compare two external optical references before and after cleaning an observation window. Keep lamp setting, path length and sampling time fixed. Report both successful and failed blank checks. Training can happen outside R3 without opening the chamber.

Make the working conditions explicit.

Instrument training is supervised. Before an independent shift, reproduce a blank reading, complete a record and identify operations that would cross the material boundary.

Funding is agreed for specific shift and instrument work; this page makes no support guarantee. Orbital travel and accommodation need separate arrangements. Joining a project is not a shuttle booking.
