People / Shared instruments, clear responsibility

A measurement
has someone behind it.

We share instrument shifts without sharing away responsibility for a reading. A record must make sense to the person who takes the next shift.

OuterEco / Small laboratory

  1. Mara Lin

    Experiment coordination / material boundary

Maintains the boundary log and approves material-transfer records. Her present work follows slow nutrient imbalance in recirculating algal beds. Inspection and transfer remain distinct events.

  2. Oren Vale

    Optical methods

Checks window fouling, lamp drift and the difference between absorbance and suspended-particle scattering. Raw instrument settings stay beside released channels; doubtful readings are not improved for appearance.

  3. N. Sen

    Culture systems

Maintains external comparison cultures. They sit outside R3’s sealed boundary and are not replacement material for the closed experiment.

  4. Liu Wen

    Research student / sediment images

Works on a repeatable sediment-image grid and records observations that cannot be interpreted through an obscured window. An unavailable reading still needs an account of what happened.

A handover begins with a complete record.

The released rota covers 2151-09-27 through 2151-10-03: optical checks on Monday and Thursday, boundary-log reconciliation on Friday. This is a dated arrangement, not a display of who is currently on duty.

Before an independent shift, new students reproduce an external blank reading, write one complete instrument record and identify which observations would require opening the chamber. The coordinator signs off that exercise first.

A missing measurement remains missing. Handover does not use interpolation to manufacture continuity or describe an external control as a replicate inside R3.
