Stay long enough
to see slow change.

An experiment can be small if its question has clear boundaries. One third-ring chamber is a place for patient observation, not a shorthand for a whole city.

R3

Third-ring chamber

An illuminated algal bed, a recirculating water loop and a gas headspace exchange material. Light and heat removal still cross the material boundary. Routine replacement material is not part of the closed experiment described here. We ask about nutrient imbalance, sediment and other changes that accumulate slowly.

Epoch 2140-03-22 is day one. Released data contains only five observations: days 4183, 4190, 4197, 4204 and 4210. That record does not fill the experiment’s elapsed time.

Paths, not flow rates, proportions or an exhaustive account of biological processes. Material closure is not energy isolation.

Optical signals and living material

Optical density at 680 nm responds to pigments, suspended particles and the optical path. We check the window and external reference before discussing a culture. The next comparison needs an independent retained-dry-mass measurement, not a guessed conversion factor.

Who records a boundary?

A boundary log must distinguish an optical inspection from a material transfer. The inspection at 2151-10-01 08:40 was external and involved no transfer. Elapsed calendar days cannot fill gaps in event coverage.

Keep unavailable readings visible

A failed reading keeps its reason for failure. A missing channel need not invalidate another readable channel; one readable channel does not certify the whole system.

Useful starting questions for students ↗

Keep the scale visible.

A uniform, uninhabited chamber does not include human food production, daily behaviour or the spatial complexity of a satellite city. R3 does not prove decades of city-scale closure and provides no evidence of an extraterrestrial organism.

Work at this scale can still be useful. A traceable failure, an explicit unit and an honest gap give the next comparison a better place to begin.
